Mecalac 216MRail
Successfully Tested in Antwerp

We recently visited FDP in Antwerp with the Mecalac 216MRail. During that visit, the machine had the opportunity to prove itself under real-world conditions at two different locations: the De Lijn metro network in Berchem and a pre-assembly site on Linkeroever.

In Berchem, the focus was on work in an urban setting. Space was limited on the 1,000 mm-wide tram track, and the adjacent track remained in use during the work. With a tram passing every ten minutes, this provided a realistic picture of the conditions that rail contractors face on a daily basis.

It is precisely in situations like these that the compact design of the 216MRail really comes into its own. The distinctive Mecalac boom keeps the total working height low, allowing for efficient operation even under overhead lines, in tunnels, and in other locations with height restrictions. At the same time, the work area remains clearly visible to the operator, and work can be performed close to existing infrastructure.

At Linkeroever, the focus shifted to the machine’s lifting performance. Here, a pre-assembled rail section approximately 18 meters long and weighing about 7,000 kg was moved. The 216MRail lifted the load over the side of the machine and was even able to continue moving sideways while doing so.

In practice, it was clear to see how the machine’s various features work together. The design of the Mecalac boom provides plenty of lifting power without compromising on compactness. Combined with the low center of gravity, this results in a stable machine, even when handling heavy loads.

The advantages of the 216MRail were also evident during movements between the various work sites. The hydrostatically driven rail undercarriage ensures smooth and controlled movement along the tracks. Combined with four-wheel steering, a compact upper structure, and a tight turning radius, the machine remains highly maneuverable, even when the available workspace is minimal. Because the 216MRail can travel on both roads and rails, it is possible to quickly switch between different work sites and tasks.

The field day in Antwerp demonstrated just how versatile the Mecalac 216MRail is. From working alongside an active tram track to moving heavy rail components, the field day demonstrated how the 216MRail combines high lifting performance with the maneuverability required for rail work in urban environments.
